What is the most economical and safe way to pack and send?
Over the years, my father and I have found Australia Post Flat Rate Packaging to be the best option. Here's why:
- No parcels have been lost so far. Tracking comes standard and all deliveries are to the Scan My Photo Australia Post PO Box.
- Convinence. There are many Australia Post locations and you don't need to worry about parcel dimensions.
- A range of packaging options, some of which are perfect for the standard 6x4" (15x10cm) photographs.
- Price. They are the most economical option for under 5kg.
Here are the best Australia Post Flat Rate Packaging options:
Regular Parcel Box Small (220 x 160 x 70mm) - Perfect for under 500 photos
Click here to see the Australia Post page (page will open in new tab)
The total cost will be $12.89 to post approximately 500 6x4" (15x10cm) photos, which is under the 5kg limit (about 1.8kg). The regular parcel box is $2.29 and the regular parcel post shipping is $10.60.
Bulk scanning of 500 photos at 22c each will cost $110.
So, to scan 500 photos, the total cost will be about $122.89.
Once you purchase the box you can start filling it with photos:
- Pack photos into ziploc bags (to weatherproof) and label the bag with a name (naming is optional and will be used to name the scanned files e.g. a bag maked "Holidays 1989" will have filenames like "holidays_1989_001.jpg" contained in a folder named "holidays_1989"). Naming the ziplock bag is useful if you want photographs arranged in events/celebrations/holidays etc. Such personalised folders and file names are free unless the folder contains less than 24 scans. For folders containing less than 24 scans, a fee of $1.50 will be charged.
- Arrange the photo containing ziploc bags side-by-side and flat as shown below.
- Write the Scan My Photo PO Box address details in the designated areas at the top of the box (these details will be given on order confirmation).
- Write your details in the designated sender area at the bottom of the box.
- Use packaging tape to seal the box, especially the gaps around the lid of the box.
- Take the box to your nearest Australia Post Outlet.
Regular Parcel Box Medium (240 x 190 x 120mm) - Perfect for under 1000 photos
Click here to see the Australia Post page (page will open in new tab)
The total cost will be $17.19 to post approximately 1000 6x4" (15x10cm) photos, which is under the 5kg limit (about 4kg). The regular parcel box is $2.69 and the regular parcel post shipping is $14.50.
Bulk scanning of 1000 photos at 22c each will cost $220.
So, to scan 1000 photos, the total cost will be about $237.19.
Follow a similar proceedure as the small box above, but pack the majority of photos in an upward position parallel to the front of the box. Futher photos can be packed at the back and on the top of the already packed photographs.
